Posting this in politics so people can avoid it if they want to

It's Open Enrollment season at my work which means my yearly raging at the amazing product of late stage capitalism we call health insurance. I'm in an hour-long webinar today describing the changes to different plans and I can't stop shaking my head and saying "this is so stupid".

An example: my insurance provider offers a $200 gift card for getting a surgery at a "Center for Excellence" (which is just a cheap hospital that will save them money).

Even under our most expensive plan, you could still be saddled with $7000 depending on how much you need to utilize (even after paying almost $2k for the plan itself). And that's only if your insurance deems the things you need as actually "necessary". This is a perfect example of the kind of bullshit they try and pull

One "good" thing they changed behavioral/mental health visits from a $60 copay to a $30 copay. Cool.

Talk to me about how much you all love your plans :)

At my previous employer, the health insurance was utter garbage, and the company it was through was so difficult to deal with that hardly anyone in the organization used it.

For example, they would not pay for any mental health care (therapy, psychiatrist, crisis care, prescriptions, etc, etc) until you have spent at least $2000, more if it involved multiple visits to a professional (like regular therapy). Instead, if you contacted to the insurance company to inquire about mental health coverage they would send you links to breathing exercises and local yoga instructors before answering questions regarding actual coverage. Didn't help that HR referred me to their church pastor for help when I brought up how ridiculous the insurance company was.

Joke's on you I read every single post on the Swamp whether or not it's relevant to my interests.

I sit across the way from out benefits team and I can tell you the wheel of pain is a perfect circle. Listening to some of the garbage they have to deal with in order to implement basic quality of life enhancements for our company portal is like pulling teeth (including the $120 copay).

For example, one of our health insurance clients tried to bill us for tens of thousands of dollars because our portal timed out after ten minutes of inactivity instead of five. Nowhere is this mentioned in our contract. Literally just pulling charges out of their ass to line their pockets.
