I love coming across an old video of rowing. The old goats of the rowing world are probably some of the most nostalgia-laden and early-adopters of tech for an amateur sport that I have seen.
First up is a video of an old new story of the legendary Washington-Lee crew coach, Charlie Butt. In the DC area this guy is a God. He coached so many of the greatest "schoolboy" crews during the latter half of the 20th century. Coaches like him, Harry Parker of Harvard, Frank Cunningham of Seattle, have this stoicism that is not present anymore in coaching now-a-days. They were craftsmen, leaders, and technical savants that could make someone rowing a gilded bathtub win a race. Now it is so much about the bio-mechanical and physiological performance that matters, coupled with one's ability to do thee social media well.
Anyway, I'll post more videos as I rediscover them. For now, here is Charlie Butt.
