I bought 3 Junji Ito books and it reminds me when I used to be uneasy and scared of everything even remotely creepy. It’s dreadful and I love it.
I remember finding a reference to that Manga one summer night in high school and went on a Google hunt to find and read the source. It was definitely more creepy than that one image makes it seem like lol.
Context is important, especially in Spookies. The big finale is bold and wild By itself, but it needs the build up to convey the intent. Good illustration of this can be found in this video that does a good job talking about how different mediums handle horror. Plus it’s just a good video essay.
Junji Ito is one of the few horror Manga-ka to actually (intentionally) give me the spookiest when I read them. Most “horror” manga, and comics for that matter, that I’ve read haven’t spooked me the same way.
Unless shit happens to eyes. Eye don’t like that.
What about ears AND eyes? I'm reading Uzumaki now, maybe 3 chapters in. And damn, those horror splash pages have been INTENSE.
