    Zach's Clone Hero Backlog

I went too hard on curating songs for Clone Hero and somehow ended up with over 4000 of them! If you are unfamiliar with Clone Hero, it is, well, a clone of Guitar Hero made in Unity. There is an active community of charters for all genres of music. There are tons of setlists, packs of hundreds of tracks easily available to download, and the charts from the original Guitar Hero & Rock Band games.

I've decided enough is enough! I'm going to play through my entire collection of songs because I don't like having fun. The length of each track varies of course, but estimating each track as a 5 minute length average, I should be able to get through all ~4,300 songs in about 360 hours, or basically one hour a day! Some days I may play more, some days I may play less. The goal is to complete the journey by December 31st 2021.

Each track will use the following format:

    Artist - Track Name
    Genre
    Link to track

My enjoyment of the music on a 10 point scale (5 being inoffensive but not particularly enjoyable, meh, hopefully the baseline)
My enjoyment of the chart on a 10 point scale (5 being a reasonably fun, but ultimately forgetable chart. I probably won't come back to play this one again)
    Could I complete the track?
Small collection of thoughts. I will probably keep this brief because, y'know, there are THOUSANDS to get through.

    Collection #1: Circuit Break
"Circuit Breaker is a setlist focused on music on the electronic spectrum. Featuring full difficulty, custom highways, a boss-rush tiering system, and over 115 pure bangers. You wanted a setlist that doesn't have lots of filler and obscure Deathcore? This is the one for you!"

    TIER 00 - AN INTRODUCTION

1 Instant Reality - Sensory Deprivation (CB Intro)

    Ambient
    instantreality.bandcamp.com/track/sensory-deprivation

    Music: 5/10
    Chart: 1/10
    Completed: Yes!
This track is an introduction to the Circuit Break list. They added vocals explaining the concept of the album. Basically, each tier will increase in difficulty and it's meant to play linearly.

TIER 01 - ENTER THE CIRCUIT BREAKER

2 Feint - We Won't Be Alone (feat. Laura Brehm)

    Drum & Bass
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=SItIaWAjI_4

    Music: 4/10
    Chart: 1/10
    Completed: Yes!
I don't mind DnB, but this was a pretty bland track, both in content and gameplay.

3 Krewella - We Go Down

    Dubstep
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GmJKEWqYlY

    Music: 3/10
    Chart: 3/10
    Completed: Yes!
I don't like dubstep, and this was no exception. Mostly inoffensive, and the chart had a few interesting rhythms to it.

4 Psy - Gangnam Style (lmao)

    K-Pop
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQacwbHGoak

    Music: 6/10
    Chart: 4/10
    Completed: Yes!
I actually had more fun with than one than I thought I would! It's been a long time since I listened to the whole track, and I can totally see why it was such a hit. The chart was a bit repetitive.

    5 Tiasu - The Ebb

    Electro
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmBNfp-ZwPU

    Music: 7/10
    Chart: 7/10
    Completed: Yes!
Nice, a good track! I liked the chord progression in this one, and it had a little bit of angst to it. This falls under the Guitar Hero archetype I like to call "Waiting for the Solos". It had a few fun solo sections, but the sections in between them were pretty bland.

    6 Giga- LUVORATORRRRRY! (REOL Version)

    Electro House
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-o_bMkzOW0

    Music: 4/10
    Chart: 4/10
    Completed: Yes!
Not a big fan of this one, but I the vocals reminded me of 90s and early 2000s electronic music, which made me happy.

    7 Miami Horror - Somtimes

    Indietronica
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fn7FXGaHTNs

    Music: 6/10
    Chart: 3/10
    Completed: Yes!
Groovy little track, but super boring to play. Plus they open and close it with spammy synth notes which feel out of place.

    8 I.Y.F.F.E., Auractic & Au5 - Sweet [Aren Eternal]

    Electro
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AABek_tX0U

    Music: 5/10
    Chart: 5/10
    Completed: Yes!
This is about as middle as the road as it gets. The chart had some variety, but none of it was that interesting.

    9 Teminite - A New Dawn

    Glitch Hop
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=9psAQAgQV98

    Music: 3/10
    Chart: 6/10
    Completed: Yes!
Lmao this is some gaming-montage-ass music. Chartwise, it's what I call a strummer. Heavily focused around rhytmic strumming, and it had a decent solo at the end.

    TIER 02 - LIQUID COOLING

10 The Chain Gang of 1974 - Sleepwalking

    Indietronica
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=rprf7LEraU4

    Music: 4/10
    Chart: 2/10
    Completed: Yes!
Aptly named track. I felt like I was sleepwalking while playing it.

11 Tony Castles - Heart in the Pipes (KAUF Remix)

    Chillwave
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3QxV9J3Qv0

    Music: 6/10
    Chart: 2/10
    Completed: Yes!
Chill music doesn't translate to engage gameplay.

    12 M83 - Midnight City

    Electropop
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=dX3k_QDnzHE

    Music: 7/10
    Chart: 3/10
    Completed: Yes!
We all know this one. Solid song, boring as hell to play. Sax solo saves it.

13 Velvetine - The Great Divide (Seven Lions Remix)

    Melodic Dubstep
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDplwu9kH9Y

    Music: 5/10
    Chart: 6/10
    Completed: Yes!
The first third of the chart did this cool blend of following the melody and the drums, but unfortunately that went away at the halfway point. If it kept going, it would have been an interesting mix of textures.

    14 Zeta - The Distance

    Synthwave
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yuI3ynLI3I

    Music: 4/10
    Chart: 4/10
    Completed: Yes!
First song to take my multiple tries. Meh overall, but the middle had a slightly tricky repeating part.

15 Burger King Foo...Er, Jake Bowen - Gravity and Friction

    Ambient Electronic
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSV4WA0X7uM

    Music: 6/10
    Chart: 7/10
    Completed: Yes!
This was a fun track! It had lots of high-tempo tapping where you travel up and down the neck, while still providing spots to cool down. It would make for a good warm-up for a session.

16 Neon Indian - Polish Girl

    Chillwave/Synth Pop
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fo6ZaCTqxwM

    Music: 9/10
    Chart: 1/10
    Completed: Yes!
Hey, I know this one! It's a Pandora classic. Great song, awful chart. It just wasn't fun to play. Lots of sections were over-charted and hard to follow.

Overall: Seems like the theme of Liquid Cooling was "Chill". There were some decent tracks, but they weren't that fun to play.

  • Oct. 19, 2020, 10:37 a.m.

What a fun thread concept! I had no idea that Clone Hero had such a deep following, it makes me wish I kept my PC guitar controller. I loved GH3 for the PC but I couldn't find any other tracks (at the time) to play more than just the original set list. It's also fascinating to see songs that are enjoyable to listen to be absolutely garbage charts lol

Back in high school and college I would play RB 2 & 3 on the Wii all the time. This is in no way a serious accolade, but my group made it to like top 10 on the Wii charts in overall score. Mostly comes down to volume of songs played, but it's fun to think back on. Eventually I cracked my Wii and from there you could install files that would trick the DLC shop into thinking you paid for a song. I wish I knew exactly how it worked, because that's so crazy to me.

I only have the bluetooth wiimote controllers, and the connection cuts out all the time. Luckily there's a handy adapter to connect Wiimotes via usb so now I have a super stable connection! Being able to play songs on a 1ms monitor with 144hz refresh rate is like playing an entirely new game.

TIER 03 - LIGHT UP THE FLOOR

17 Rjominn - Bassinn mun Droppa

    Electronic Pop
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgaqoFAZJlw

    Music: 2/10
    Chart: 1/10
    Completed: Yes!
An absolutely awful, boring track. It's from an Icelandic comedy group, so I get the joke of it being a shitty electronic song building up to a drop, but that doesn't make it less shitty of a song lol.

18 Jasur Gaipov - Ming Afsus

    Pop
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DuaN8xh0z4

    Music: 4/10
    Chart: 3/10
    Completed: Yes!
If you can't tell by now, I'm not big on poppy electronic music.

19 Nitro Fun - Final Boss

    Complextro
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGh5DV0D3wk

    Music: 6/10
    Chart: 6/10
    Completed: Yes!
Not bad! Decent variety in the different sections of the chart, but I was left wanting more complexity.

20 Knife Party & Pegboard Nerds - Harpoon

    Electro House
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZSUjlYFGmQ

    Music: 4/10
    Chart: 5/10
    Completed: Yes!
The main riff was all strummed, which made playing the rhythm fun. This genre is all about building up to "epic drops", but so far none of them have translated to interesting rhythms to play.

21 XS Project - Bochka, Bass, Kolbaser

    Hardbass
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5uzc3U8Qhc

    Music: 10/10
    Chart: 4/10
    Completed: Yes!
@boomerJuice95 LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Finally a banger! Sadly, it's not that great to play, but there's a fun part near the end.

22 Duck Sauce - NRG(Skrillex, Kill The Noise, Milo & Otis Remix)

    Electro House
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbuwFJU1Gf0

    Music: 6/10
    Chart: 6/10
    Completed: Yes!
The chart was better than expected. The drops were interesting and had a fun rhythm.

23 Thousand Synth Sky - The Eternal Ones

    Electro Dance
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFQqFDYohpA

    Music: 6/10
    Chart: 7/10
    Completed: Yes!
Whew, that was a wrist killer. This one had a lot of fast chord jumping, which is something I need to get better at.

TIER 04 - WAVES OF ENTROPY

24 Aux Raus - This Is How It Works

    Hardcore Techno-Punk
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArCwEUx35ww

    Music: 6/10
    Chart: 5/10
    Completed: Yes!
Not much to say here. It was fine.

    25 Herbie Hancock - Rockit

    Electro
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHhD4PD75zY

    Music: 9/10
    Chart: 7/10
    Completed: Yes!
This is an iconic song! It was done by my favorite charter JoeyD, and he delivered yet again. It was interesting to play along to vinyl scratching.

    26 Acid-Notation - Waluigi Pinball Remix

    Electro House
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8eu2YzTKh4

    Music: 6/10
    Chart: 7/10
    Completed: Yes!
The Mario Kart series has some decent tracks, but I'm not SUPER into Waluigi Pinball. When the remix did its own thing, I liked it a bit more. I think the BPM could have been a bit higher. Another solid JoeyD chart.

    27 Neil Cicierega - Wallspin

    Snyth Pop
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=mw2fh8qfDiA

    Music: 7/10
    Chart: 5/10
    Completed: Yes!
Not my favorite Neil song, but a good one nonetheless.

28 Psyqui - Don't You Want Me (feat. Such)

    Speed Garage (what?)
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7ouv9AyB_o

    Music: 8/10
    Chart: 8/10
    Completed: Yes!
Oooooh, this one was fun! A very pleasant surprise. This is how I want drops to be charted. The glitchy drops were tricky to follow, but the challenge was what I was looking for.

    29 The Subs - Mitsubitchi

    Electro House
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJMuEB5hFdc

    Music: 6/10
    Chart: 6/10
    Completed: Yes!
It was tricky to keep a groove going in this song. Definitely a nice change of pace, so I appreciate what the chart was doing, but it wasn't that fun for me.

30 Lemon Demon - Super Hey Ya (OutKast Remix)

    Super House
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAGYmLLyOpI

    Music: 2/10
    Chart: 2/10
    Completed: Yes!
Look, I like Neil's music, but this song felt low effort to me. I don't think he added anything notable to Hey Ya, and the chart mostly followed the arpeggiating synth, which was repetitive and annoying.

Overall: I don't know what this tier was going for. Looks like it had some of the highest rated songs & charts so far, though!

  • Oct. 22, 2020, 2:51 p.m.

Love this. Reminds me of trying and usually failing to get Frets on Fire to work properly on my parent's ancient PC in like, 5th and 6th grade. When it did work, all the "fun" songs I found were actually terrible to play. DAMN SHAME.

    I adjusted to a 5 point scale.

    Music:
    1/5 - I hate this song
2/5 - This song is bad
    3/5 - A fine song
    4/5 - I like this song
    5/5 - I love this song!!!!!!

    Charts:
    1/5 - An actively bad/unfun chart
2/5 - Not great / does things that bother me
3/5 - An adequate but unexciting chart
    4/5 - This is a fun chart!
5/5 - I love this chart!!! Part of the rotation of songs I play frequently.

TIER 05 - DROP THE BASESTATIONS (oh no...)

31 Flux Pavilion - Blow the Roof

    Electro House
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_chHL-57i0

    Music: 3/10
    Chart: 2/10
    Completed: Yes!
The only thing that blowing here...is this song.

32 Hellberg & Deutgen vs Splitbreed - Collide (Astronaut & Barely Alive Remix)

    Complextro
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQtgaxq92Dg

    Music: 2/5
    Chart: 2/5
    Completed: Yes!
    Boring song, boring chart. Next.

    33 Teminite - Beastmode

    Dubstep
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWN6hZu9jjE

    Music: 3/5
    Chart: 3/5
    Completed: Yes!
Not the worst dubstep I've heard. The drop was actually interesting to play and well charted!

34 Pegboard Nerds - Self Destruct

    Dubstep
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWDnwTsdtaw

    Music: 3/5
    Chart: 3/5
    Completed: Yes!
I think I've heard this one before. I like the main riff and the drop's not that obnoxious.

35 Gohma & Reek - The Soltan Syndrome

    Dubstep
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzZt5rCD60g

    Music: 1/5
    Chart: 1/5
    Completed: Unfortunately
    This song fucking sucks

    36 Knower - Time Traveler

    Synth Funk
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=itRWssMSuvw

    Music: 4/5
    Chart: 3/5
    Completed: Yes!
Good stuff! The chart was solid. It had nice variety and a couple tricky parts, but I don't think I'd want to play it again.

    Overall: I don't like dubstep.

TIER 06 - GETTING THE GROOVE

    37 Louis Cole - Thinking

    Synth Funk
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0YvQrrepP4

    Music: 4/5
    Chart: 3/5
    Completed: Yes!
Short & sweet little track. It's pretty simple, though, so there wasn't too much going on to play.

    38 Ratatat - Nightclub Amnesia

    Electronic Rock
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=sk2aOsc3bc8

    Music: 4/5
    Chart: 2/5
    Completed: Yes!
I like Ratatat, but this was pretty boring to play. I need more THINGS to do during a track.

39 Lenno - Fever (feat. Benson)

    Nu Disco
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVS21eB1BAI

    Music: 3/5
    Chart: 2/5
    Completed: Yes!
I experienced everything the song had to offer after chorus. Yawnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.

40 Hawyre - Let Me Hear That

    Synth Funk
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=21d1CdIqnj0

    Music: 4/5
    Chart: 4/5
    Completed: Yes!
Another JoeyD BANGER! I love this dude's CHARTS. Funky fresh beats with a solid chart to match.

    41 Rhodes - Sudden Kiss

    Future Funk
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltsyhj3d0uQ

    Music: 3/5
    Chart: 3/5
    Completed: Yes!
I like future funk alright, but this one was a bit repetitive for my tastes. The mixing was muddled at parts, so it was hard to decipher the rhythm I was supposed to be playing.

42 The Floozies - Sunroof Cadillac

    Synth Funk
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgDz5-tfnTY

    Music: 3/5
    Chart: 2/5
    Completed: Yes!
It looks like JoeyD is not infallible. This one didn't do it for me. The chart didn't do a good job of distinguishing the instrumentation of the standard notes vs the tapping notes, which lead to awkward switches.

43 Varien & Razihel - Toothless Hawkins (And His Robot Jazz Band)

    Electro Swing
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9so2mSpTRk

    Music: 1/5
    Chart: 1/5
    Completed: Unfortunately
I had a brief Electro Swing phase like 8 or 9 years ago. Now I can't stand it. This track was garbage.

    What the fuck is this?

    i.imgur.com/yZNZRna.png

Overall: This was a funky section. Looks like I enjoyed the songs more than the charts, but I'll take it over dubstep.

  • Oct. 26, 2020, 9:20 a.m.

Ahh, it becomes immediately apparent @pooplol does not like dubstep lmao. I wonder if you're just not a fan or if dubstep also (as I suspect) is just an awful genre for clone hero

I uhh, don't know what I'm looking at here
